Travel to Korea/Jeju 제주

A summer holiday to the beautiful island - Day 2. (part 2/2)

I'm writing this blog approximately 150 days after coming back from Jeju island. Due to having to complete my schoolwork, I was quite busy, and I couldn't spare time to work on my blog for a few months. I completed this semester last week so it makes me feel obliged to get on with the uncompleted story of my Jeju trip.

Anyway, long time no see my blog :)

1. 산방산 (Sanbangsan Mountain)

After lunch, I headed to Sanbangsan Mountain. It was quite close to the restaurant, 춘미향, that it didn't take us long to get there.

Sanbangsan Mountain

Sanbangsan Mountain is located in the southern region of Jeju. The huge, rocky mountain, which looks like a bell, is seen from anywhere in the area. When it's very cloudy, you can catch mystic views of the mountain with clouds on its head.

There are many things to look at near the mountain - Sanbang Yeondae Signal Fire Station, Yongmeori Hae-an(Dragon Head Coast), Hamel Memorial, and Sanbangsan Land Amusement Park, which is my favourite.  Additionally, it has two Buddhist temples - Sanbangsa, and Bomunsa.

Sanbangsa Temple

Not far from the temple, there is a signal tower, Sanbang Yeondae. It was built during the Joseon dynasty in order to transmit urgent political or military news by smoke or torchlight. Apparently, six officers and twelve troops were deployed to the beacon mound.

After taking some pictures there, I headed down to Yongmeori Hae-an(Dragon Head Coast). I came across the monument to commemorate Hamel's landing.

Hamel was a Dutch sailor who accidentally landed in Jejudo Island with his 36 colleagues. They were heading to Japan but ended up landing in Jeju because of a huge storm. They were captured by the Jeju's governor and forced to serve Joseon as servants. Approximately thirteen poignant years after their landing, they were rescued by the Dutch India Company, which was in Nagasaki, Japan. Hamel went back to the Netherlands and published the Journal of Hendrick Hamel, which depicted his life in Joseon.

The monument was also built to commemorate his harsh life in Joseon.

Sadly, I couldn't get in the ship because of the coronavirus situation.

Leaving the frustration behind, I went to Sanbangsan Land to get on a STUNNING ship rather than the one above. It was located about four-minute away on foot from the Hamel ship.

TA-DA!

This pirate ship ride was enormously lovely. It was more than just fun, it was THRILLING! and 3,000 won for a ride was definitely worth trying. I'm afraid it would be slightly inappropriate for me to say though, the handlebar that you can grab on the ride felt a bit shoddy due to its age. It, however, made the ride more fun and exciting. It's safe anyway. You won't lose your life merely for 3,000 won worth of the ride. Don't worry, but enjoy.

2. 감귤박물관 (Citrus Museum, Gamgyul Bakmulgwan)

Jeju equals mandarine oranges. Mandarine oranges are one of Jeju's specialities. As a person who loves oranges, I was excited to visit it. I hoped the museum would not ruin my expectation...

The BIG orange welcomes visitors

I expected some activities such as picking oranges or making orange tea. However, due to the flipping coronavirus, no event was taking place. The only thing I could do was look around in the museum for a vast amount of information over oranges throughout the world. If I were an agriculture student who had studied oranges, it would be quite interesting but I was not! So, I had no other choice than to enjoy the nice weather and many... orange trees...

The weather was fantastic.

The admission fee is quite cheap. "My time is not cheap though."

In the museum, there was a greenhouse where various oranges from all parts of the world were being cultivated. The views inside the greenhouse were very nice, exotic, and Instagrammable. I'm persuading myself...(joking).

Are you a big fan of the Kpop group, BIGBANG? Especially GD's?

Then, here is another shrine for you.

3. 천지연폭포 (Cheonjiyeon Waterfall)

Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is so famous and popular that many tourists make sure to put it on their itinerary. It was designated as a National Monument due to its beautiful and mystical scenery. The size of the waterfall is not majestically huge but I liked the vibes and scenery it offers. The path towards the waterfall was especially pretty and romantic. If you are to visit Jeju as a couple, I highly recommend you put Cheonjiyeon Waterfall on your itinerary.

4. 제주동문시장 (Jeju Dongmun Traditional Market)

After the visit to Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, I was starving so headed to Jeju Dongmun Sijang for dinner. It is famous for many food stalls that open at night in the market. Those food stands sell various, delicious food and the market is full of lively vibes. Although it's a bit inconvenient to withdraw cash and stand in a long queue in order to buy food, it will be worth visiting the market if you like street food and a lively atmosphere.

Look at that LONG queue

There were so many food stalls in the market. As were people. I was a bit confused about what to eat but ended up buying "오겹살 튀김 + 버터 전복구이(O-gyeopsal Tuigim + Butter Jeonbok Gui, Fried pork belly + Abalones grilled with butter)" and "흑돼지 또띠아(Heug-doi-ji Tottia, Black pork tortilla)". I ate these simply because I watched some videos on youtube suggesting what you should eat at the market.

The stall for "Fried pork belly + Abalones grilled with butter" had so many people waiting in a long queue that I had to wait for a long time. As far as I remember, it had the most customers waiting for the food.

I wanted to supplement the food with another so picked the black pork tortilla. Thankfully(?), there were not many customers and I could buy it quickly. The looks of the food were good.

To evaluate those foods, I would give 3.8 out of 5 to "Fried pork belly + Abalones grilled with butter". It was not bad, the meat was good, the fried garlic chips topped on it and veggies went well with the meat. However, the abalones grilled with butter were not properly cooked and quite slimy. As an abalone person, I was disappointed with the texture and small size of them.

Speaking of the second one, black pork tortilla, I would give it 2.8 out of 5. The quality of the pork was quite good but that was all. The sauce was a bit salty and the complete absence of veggies made it too heavy to devour. There was nothing to cleanse your palate with so you should prepare some drinks in advance. It's only for carnivores who can live without veggies.
