Apple corrects a mistake in representing the whole Mt. Baekdusan is in Chinese territory.

The Korean Peninsula

Forced by strong complaints from Korean netizens, US IT giant Apple corrected a mistake in representing the whole Mt. Baekdusan belonged in Chinese territory.

Vank, a cyber diplomatic body, had globally carried out a correction movement since the 12th, stating: 'We recently discovered a mistake in which the whole Mt. Baekdusan had been represented as a Chinese territory -- off the Korean peninsula -- while searching for Heaven Lake'.

Heaven Lake was divided in the wake of "the frontier treaty between North Korea and China", concluded by Kim Il-Seong (North Korea's leader) and Zhou Enlai (China's leader). The division rate is each 54.5% for North Korea and 45.5% for China. On this account, the northwest of the lake was vested in China and the southeast in North Korea.

While the mountain is written: Baekdusan in Korean (left), it's written: Changbai Shan -- its Chinese name -- in English (right).

Vank complained: 'Mt. Baekdusan has a significant meaning in Korean history as a symbol, so the mistake in representing the whole mountain as a Chinese territory must be corrected'. They upped the ante in pressure through global petition movements.

Park Gi-Tae, chief of Vank, pointed out that as billions of people recognise the world's geography on Apple Map, Apple's misrepresentation of the demarcation between the two must be corrected as soon as possible.

Vank sent a protest letter requesting that Heaven Lake be represented in two parts between North Korea and China, as Google Map and Naver Map do. Korean Netizens participated in the campaign too. As a result, Apple corrected the mistake about Mt. Baekdusan in its products such as iPhone, iPad, and Macbook.

Mr Park said: 'This achievement was possible because of Korean netizens' spontaneous participation.'; 'We will correct mistakes in representing the mountain only as Changbai Shan.'

The Chinese government identified Mt. Baekdusan as Mt. Chingbai Shan and has been developing the "Changbai Shan Culture Theory" to claim that the areas around Mt. Baekdusan belong to China historically and culturally since ancient times.

In particular, China has designated Mt. Baekdusan as one of the 10 China's best mountains in an effort to absorb Korean history into theirs and is promoting it as China's Mt. Changbai Shan.
